What are the measurement and weight restrictions for using UPS Services?

Package dimensions cannot exceed 70kg in weight, 274cm in length, with a maximum girth of 400cm.

Packages up to 20kg, 97cm in length, and 300cm in girth can be dropped off at a UPS Access Point location. If your package exceeds these dimensions, it must be dropped off at a UPS Customer Centre. Ensure to check drop-off locations via the UPS website using their store locator here.

To measure girth, use this formula: Length + 2x Width + 2x Height. Detailed instructions are available on the UPS website here.

Packages exceeding 25kg require a special heavy-package label.

How do you measure a package?

- Determine Length, Width and Height: The longest side of your parcel is your length.

- Round Up: Make sure you’re rounding up to the nearest centimetre when taking your measurements.

How do I prepare my item for shipping?

Make sure you choose packing materials right for your shipment. Those can differ by product type and its special characteristics, e.g. fragile or non-fragile item. Also, assess the form of your parcel contents: for example, liquids or powders will require special packaging materials. Check out the UPS website packaging guidelines for more helpful advice.

Use a Corrugated Box: If reusing a box, make sure it’s in good condition (no punctures, tears or corner damage). Opt for a box that’s suitable for the contents you’re shipping.

Provide Internal Protection:

Cushion the contents of your parcel properly. Fragile articles need separation from each other, and from the box. Make sure you use enough cushioning material to ensure that the contents do not move when you shake the container.

The following items provide the best cushion and protection:

  • Inflatable packaging
  • Engineered foam
  • Kraft paper
  • Polystyrene peanuts
  • Bubble wrap

Seal Your Box Securely: Proper closure of your box is just as important as proper cushioning for the safety and security of your shipment. Use strong tape five centimeters or more in width to seal the box.

Where Can I Get Packaging to Ship My Item?

You do not need to use any branded boxes or bags to ship an item with UPS. However, it is crucial to choose safe and sturdy boxes that can support the weight and size of your items. You can reuse old boxes you have at home or purchase new ones. Suitable packaging materials can be bought from various sources, including local post offices, stationery stores, or online retailers. Ensure that the packaging meets the guidelines provided by UPS for safe and secure shipping. To order packaging from UPS, you can sign up to UPS and order UPS branded packaging here.
